Coaching Challenges and Solutions 12

What if the stated goal is one a client is ambivalent about?

Sometimes companies hire a coach for an employee and that employee is on the fence about what the company wants them to change or accomplish.  Other times an individual is pressured by family or friends to make a change and hire a coach even when they are unsure they want to do it.

Foundational Information:

  • The coaching process is well-suited for helping people explore what they do want, their motivations, barriers, and strategies.
  • Coaches engage and partner for the benefit of the individual being coached, the client.
  • Coaches continue the relationship only as long as it is serving the client.

Questions:

  • What are the pros and cons?
  • What happens if nothing changes?
  • What happens if you do change?
  • What do you want to have happen?
  • What does it mean to you personally?
  • Describe your ideal outcome.
  • What are the barriers?
  • How will you move past the barriers?
  • How do you want to design your process?
  • What are your action steps for moving forward?

If the client chooses not to change then the coaching will focus on how they want to manage that choice with their employer or with family and friends.  It is likely that the coaching relationship will be complete very quickly.  If the client decides to change, then the coach partners with them on moving forward.
