Coaching or Mentoring – Part 5

With an internal coaching program, what training makes sense for the coaches?

Professional coach training programs ideally address the Core Competencies as identified by the International Coach Federation. A blog series on these competencies was published previously and is available at http://blog.centerforcoachingcertification.com/ctl/all-posts/.

Internal coach training programs serve as professional development and are often a component of leadership training.

Coach training generally includes:

*

How coaching is different

*

Ethics (tailor this section with the company ethics)

*

Understanding and Working with Different Personalities

*

Listening Skills, Assertive Communication Skills, Effective Questioning Techniques

*

Neuro-Linguistics (the influence of language on motivation and focus)

*

Coach-specific training applies the information specifically to the coaching process. The learning and application of information in a coach-specific training is unique to this process; it is important that the trainer have coaching experience in addition to training expertise.

The benefits of this training go far beyond enhancing the success of a coaching program. Learning the people skills and communication skills through coach training increases the ability of a leader, manager, or supervisor to engage and motivate.
