Coaching the People-focused

People-focused is defined as placing a priority on people, social interactions, sharing stories, and connecting instead of focusing on tasks.

Even when an employee was minimally effective, Rory hesitated to discipline or terminate them because it would be so hard on their finances. While Rory was respected for taking care of staff, many also resent that colleagues are not accountable for their work. Rory’s boss was questioning productivity. When Rory began working with a coach, the coach identified Rory’s style based on how Rory interacts with others.

The coach asked Rory to list what worked well with the work team. Next the coach asked Rory to list the team’s concerns. Through brainstorming, Rory developed several ideas for addressing concerns and the coach facilitated development of an action plan. Rory used the skills demonstrated by the coach in working with employees. Rory found using a coaching style of management enhanced both accountability and productivity.
