In the previous blog an example of how coaching skills are helpful in a positive conversation was provided.\u00a0 Now consider the use of coaching<\/a> skills in a tough conversation. \"Coaching<\/p>\n

Imagine HR or a manager\/supervisor are speaking with someone who is failing to meet expectations.\u00a0 These coaching questions will frame the conversation effectively:<\/p>\n

  1. How are things going here at work?<\/li>\n
  2. What do you like about your work? \u2013 OR<\/em> \u2013 What energizes you about your work?<\/li>\n
  3. What are the challenges you are facing?<\/li>\n
  4. What is your understanding of the responsibilities of your job?<\/li>\n
  5. What is your understanding of the expectations?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As appropriate, HR or the manager\/supervisor can provide the job description to refer to in the moment or add information here. <\/em><\/p>\n

    Continue the conversation with this coaching approach:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Given the responsibilities and the expectations, what is\/are the gap(s) you recognize in your performance?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      As appropriate, HR or the manager\/supervisor can provide specific input \/ observations.\u00a0 A smart add afterwards is to say, \u201cI want to support you figuring out what you want to do with the feedback.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

      If a stronger approach makes sense, they may say: \u201cCurrently the work you are doing is not meeting expectations (insert specifics here)<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Follow this up with more coaching questions:<\/p>\n

      1. What is your awareness of the impact this has on customers?<\/li>\n
      2. What is the impact on your colleagues?<\/li>\n
      3. How does it impact your opportunities?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Next the conversation can again move forward:<\/p>\n

        1. How will you course correct?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          A nice wrap-up uses a common coaching question:<\/p>\n

          1. What do you want your outcome to be in this job?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The coaching<\/a> questions invite an underperforming employee to identify the performance gap and own their plan for correcting it.<\/p>\n
