Goals\" width=\"166\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/S.M.A.R.T.-Goals-.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/S.M.A.R.T.-Goals--300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/S.M.A.R.T.-Goals--150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/S.M.A.R.T.-Goals--60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/>Doran.\u00a0 The original definition was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific:<\/strong>\u00a0target a specific area for improvement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measurable:<\/strong>\u00a0quantify, or at least suggest, an indicator of progress.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assignable:<\/strong>\u00a0specify who will do it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Realistic:<\/strong>\u00a0state what results can realistically be achieved given available resources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-related:<\/strong>\u00a0specify when the result can be achieved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Later on, it was expanded to\u00a0 S.M.A.R.T.E.R. with two more things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Evaluated:<\/strong> appraisal of a goal to assess the extent to which it has been achieved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reviewed:<\/strong> reflection and adjustment of your approach or behavior to reach a goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A common version today is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Measurable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Achievable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Realistic<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-bound<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The challenge with this version is that someone has to make a judgement call for Achievable and Realistic.<\/p>\n<p>A preferred current version for use by individuals is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Measurable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Actionable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Relevant<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-related<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The differences here are Actionable \u2013 meaning action can be taken, and Relevant \u2013 referring to it having meaning, importance, and value.<\/p>\n<p>Which version someone uses may be based on preference or it may simply be the only version they had heard.\u00a0 This makes for a rich discussion during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coaching certification.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When completing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\">coach training<\/a>, we learn that it is important client set goals based on what they do want, their internal motivation (which is where Relevant comes in), and that they are pro-actively moving toward it (Actionable).<\/p>\n<p>S.M.A.R.T. goals are naturally empowering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The acronym for S.M.A.R.T. goals was coined in 1981 by a consultant named George T.
