{"id":9111,"date":"2021-05-10T09:03:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T09:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=9111"},"modified":"2022-08-31T16:22:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T16:22:11","slug":"training-aint-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/training-aint-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Training Ain\u2019t Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Alan Elmore <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9112 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Alan-Elmore.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Elmore\" width=\"146\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Alan-Elmore.jpg 146w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Alan-Elmore-61x60.jpg 61w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:Alan@TenaciousCoach.com\">Alan@TenaciousCoach.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\">Training<\/a> and coaching are often used interchangeably.\u00a0 As a result, many trainers are looking to either make the change from trainer to coach or add coaching as a tool in their toolbox.\u00a0 On the surface, it may seem that many of the skills required for success in training are easily transferable to coaching.\u00a0 In actuality, as an experienced and degreed training professional who recently made the transition, there are stark differences in the skill sets required.\u00a0 These differences show up in the frequency of the sessions, the structure of the sessions, and the nature of the sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Trainers are well-served by recognizing and understanding that coaching is a natural and essential progression point after training has been completed.\u00a0 Learning happens as a result of training, and it is through coaching that improvement takes place.\u00a0 In the chapter \u201cTraining Ain\u2019t Coaching\u201d I use my experience of coaching my son\u2019s basketball team to describe the transfer from training to coaching professionally.\u00a0 In both cases, it is important to first teach the skill with training.\u00a0 Once this is achieved, the opportunity is there to improve potential with coaching.\u00a0 When this happens, what is required can be done more quickly and effectively.<\/p>\n<p>My intent with the chapter is to provide guidance and preparation tips to other training professionals looking to make the transition to coaching or add the coaching skill set to their repertoire.\u00a0 Training truly ain\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coaching.html\">coaching<\/a> and at the same time the transfer from trainer to coach can be much easier if it is clearly understood what training is and is not from the start.
