{"id":9108,"date":"2021-05-06T11:03:41","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T11:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=9108"},"modified":"2022-08-31T16:23:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T16:23:08","slug":"enhance-parent-child-relationships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/enhance-parent-child-relationships\/","title":{"rendered":"Enhance Parent-Child Relationships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Vonetta Wade<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9109 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Vonetta-Wade.2021.jpg\" alt=\"Vonetta Wade\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Vonetta-Wade.2021.jpg 144w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Vonetta-Wade.2021-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.achievingyourpurpose.com\/\">www.AchievingYourPurpose.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conflict between a parent and child is common.\u00a0 It makes sense given that conflict is a sign of disagreement, difference, or struggle.\u00a0 Parents want their children to be happy, safe, and successful.\u00a0 Children, especially teens, want to find their independence, explore the world around them, and make their own decisions and mistakes.\u00a0 Some parents struggle with giving their children the freedom to do so.\u00a0 I was one of those parents.<\/p>\n<p>This caused continuously painful conflict between my daughter and I the same way it did for my mom and I, mainly due to both my mom and I having experienced trauma.\u00a0 We were not aware that we were still operating in the aftereffects of the trauma and we were passing the toxic coping behavior to our children.\u00a0 The difference is that my daughter and I had the opportunity to benefit from counseling and therapy.<\/p>\n<p>My client had a similar experience with her daughter, and my daughter and I worked together as coach and therapist to help them get through it.\u00a0 I am a life coach, and my daughter is a mental health therapist.\u00a0 We knew from experience that it is possible to overcome the challenges they were facing.<\/p>\n<p>There are similarities between the roles of a coach and therapist.\u00a0 The major difference is that the therapist has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\">trained<\/a> for recognizing and diagnosing behavioral obstacles, which is what we discovered to be the cause of the conflict between my client and her daughter.\u00a0 The mother had experienced trauma and was not aware of the impact it was having on their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>I invite you to read more about how my daughter and I overcame our conflict and ineffective communication, and how we have helped others do the same in the chapter on \u201cEnhance Parent-Child Relationships\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/recommended-reading\/coaching-perspectives-series-by-the-center-for-coaching-certification-and-more.html\">Coaching Perspectives X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Vonetta Wade www.AchievingYourPurpose.com Conflict between a parent and child is common.\u00a0 It makes sense given that conflict is a sign of disagreement, difference, or &hellip;
