{"id":8713,"date":"2020-07-06T09:03:04","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T09:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8713"},"modified":"2025-04-09T21:03:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T21:03:36","slug":"common-mistake-3-of-3-lessons-learned-from-icf-assessors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/common-mistake-3-of-3-lessons-learned-from-icf-assessors\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Mistake #3 of 3 \u2013 Lessons Learned from ICF Assessors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first two of three common mistakes in the previous blogs, failure to have a clear agreement and leading, are closely related to the third common mistake, telling, teaching, or advising.\u00a0 During coach training, the biggest paradigm shift for most is that coaches do NOT tell, teach, or advise \u2013 instead, they ask questions.\u00a0 A coach is a trained professional who holds the client as a whole person who is fully capable. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8714 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Lessons Learned from ICF Assessors\" width=\"297\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-1-2-520x345.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In exploring the third common mistake shared by Jim Smith in his presentation to <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/community-events\/professional-community\/communities-of-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICF\u2019s Ethics Community of Practic<\/a>e, there are several key points to highlight .\u00a0 From ICF\u2019s Code of Ethics the definition for a coaching relationship includes having an agreement that defines responsibilities and expectations.\u00a0 This is again stated in number 2 in the code.\u00a0 In number 11 it talks about actively managing power or status difference.\u00a0 Number 21 addresses accuracy around what coaching offers.\u00a0 From the Core Competencies, under Embodies a Coaching Mindset, it says: Acknowledges clients are responsible for their own choices.\u00a0 Under Establishes and Maintains Agreements there are four points on partnering with the client so they determine focus, what to address, and their measure of success.\u00a0 Assessors are trained that if the conversation involves the coach primarily telling, teaching, or advising then it is a fail on the basis of coaching ethics.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line to all this is that it is the coach\u2019s responsibility to ensure the coach asks powerful questions so the client explores for themself, makes their own choices, creates their own strategies and action plan, and celebrates their progress and success.\u00a0 Coaching certification teaches the competencies and ethics.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training.html\">Coach training<\/a> includes practicing this during coaching sessions.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to tell people what to do.\u00a0 Coaching them so they find their own answers takes more time, skill, and patience.\u00a0Coaching is a profession that requires training and ongoing learning to best serve clients.\u00a0 The good news?\u00a0 It works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first two of three common mistakes in the previous blogs, failure to have a clear agreement and leading, are closely related to the third &hellip;
