{"id":8707,"date":"2020-06-29T09:03:30","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T09:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8707"},"modified":"2025-04-09T21:04:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T21:04:49","slug":"common-mistake-1-of-3-lessons-learned-from-icf-assessors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/common-mistake-1-of-3-lessons-learned-from-icf-assessors\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Mistake #1 of 3 \u2013 Lessons Learned from ICF Assessors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While planning for a presentation to <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/community-events\/professional-community\/communities-of-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICF\u2019s Ethics Community of Practice<\/a>, I had the opportunity to talk with the presenter, Jim Smith.\u00a0 Then, during his presentation, <em>Exploring the Convergence of Updated Ethics and Core Competencies<\/em>, what we had talked about was a powerful message for many.\u00a0 Jim talked about the three most common mistakes made in recordings of coaching sessions submitted as part of an application for an ICF credential.\u00a0 In this mini blog series, we will explore each of these three common mistakes. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8708 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-.jpg\" alt=\"Lessons Learned from ICF Assessors\" width=\"286\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors-.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors--90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors--480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors--420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lessons-Learned-from-ICF-Assessors--520x345.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first is the failure to have an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>What does that mean?\u00a0 During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training.html\">coach training<\/a> we talk about agreements happening in three stages.\u00a0 Stage one is an initial conversation about what coaching is and is not.\u00a0 Stage two is the written agreement for a coaching engagement.\u00a0 Stage three happens every single coaching session and that is where the coach asks the client what they want from the coaching session.\u00a0 Examples of questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you want to focus on today?<\/li>\n<li>What specifically do you want to accomplish in this conversation?<\/li>\n<li>How will you know this conversation was successful?<\/li>\n<li>What does achieving this mean to you?<\/li>\n<li>What might get in the way?<\/li>\n<li>How do you want to have the conversation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coaching certification<\/a> these examples are given and discussed and practiced.\u00a0 Until there is a clear agreement on exactly what the client wants from the session, it is impossible to have that coaching session.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While planning for a presentation to ICF\u2019s Ethics Community of Practice, I had the opportunity to talk with the presenter, Jim Smith.\u00a0 Then, during his &hellip;
