{"id":8621,"date":"2020-03-02T09:03:42","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T09:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8621"},"modified":"2023-03-29T15:31:13","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T15:31:13","slug":"meta-programs-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/meta-programs-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Programs Matter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">By <\/span>Beth Donovan<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The meta-program of moving towards a goal, rather than away from something negative, is very powerful.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">It is a total shift \u2013 a different mindset.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Beth-Donovan_Jan-2020.png\" alt=\"Beth Donovan\" width=\"110\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Beth-Donovan_Jan-2020.png 191w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Beth-Donovan_Jan-2020-45x60.png 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">I learned about this during my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/about\/faqs\/how-to-become-a-coach.html\">coaching certification<\/a><span class=\"s2\">.\u00a0 I work with this particular meta program frequently in health and weight coaching.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Clients tell me initially what they want to get away from or avoid.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">I hear things like \u201cI don\u2019t want heart disease.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI want to lose 100 pounds by ____.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Those statements are moving away from something negative, such as heart disease or 100 pounds.\u00a0 The goals, what they do want, are a healthy heart or to weigh 150 pounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Changing the mindset and looking at where they want to go is an amazing way to get there.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">My instructor from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coach training<\/a><span class=\"s2\">, Cathy Liska, often says that if you go to a travel agent, you tell them where you DO want to go.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Telling them where you don\u2019t want to go does not give them a destination.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">If we have a destination in mind, then we can plan how to arrive there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Shifting things from \u201cI don\u2019t want&#8230;\u201d to \u201cI do want&#8230;\u201d gives us a target of a sort.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">It is motivating as we begin to picture results in our lives.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">My clients enjoy doing vision boards or journaling about what life will be like at their goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Another important meta program is internal versus external motivation.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Internal motivation is stronger and more lasting than external motivation because we are more invested in it.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">The more we want something for ourselves, the more likely we are to go get it.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">When we have external motivation, we are doing something for someone or something outside of ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">There are other meta programs and they all matter.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">These two along with being proactive are ones that I have noticed seem to make the greatest difference in client success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Beth Donovan The meta-program of moving towards a goal, rather than away from something negative, is very powerful.\u00a0\u00a0It is a total shift \u2013 a &hellip;
