{"id":8383,"date":"2019-07-03T11:03:53","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T11:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8383"},"modified":"2019-06-18T18:26:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T18:26:22","slug":"empower-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/empower-independence\/","title":{"rendered":"Empower Independence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Body\">The idea of empowering independence seems a good one.\u00a0 The challenge is doing it effectively. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8384 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dreamstimemaximum_41933283.jpg\" alt=\"Empower Independence \" width=\"155\" height=\"116\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Consider what happens in the workplace: ideally the people inside of an organization have the ability to do their job well.\u00a0 Sometimes this is blocked by micro-managers or even simple policies requiring approval for everything.\u00a0 In those situations, people step back from ownership of the work and do just what is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">When the culture in an organization is to empower independence, the people are encouraged and rewarded for taking ownership.\u00a0 This means when given tasks, they are trusted to figure out how to do it and follow-through.\u00a0In this scenario, the people are engaged and more productive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Effectively empowering independence means creating a coaching culture in which instead of being told everything, the people are asked how and by when they will do the work.\u00a0 While this sounds simple, the reality is that it takes more time, skill, and patience to empower than it does to direct.\u00a0 An additional challenge is changing habits from telling to asking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">How can an organization empower independence for increased engagement and productivity?\u00a0 Start with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training.html\">coach training<\/a> for the leaders and then spread the effort.\u00a0After training the top leaders move to the next level and so on.\u00a0 Create a coaching program with internal coaches for entry level to mid\u2014level management and external <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">certified coaches<\/a> for the top levels of management.\u00a0 Recognize and reward leaders when they empower their team.\u00a0 Track the results and reap the benefits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The idea of empowering independence seems a good one.\u00a0 The challenge is doing it effectively.
