{"id":8380,"date":"2019-07-01T09:03:03","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T09:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8380"},"modified":"2019-06-18T18:20:17","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T18:20:17","slug":"youre-not-coaching-youre-just-telling-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/youre-not-coaching-youre-just-telling-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"You\u2019re not coaching, you\u2019re just telling stories!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Randy Kesterson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randykesterson.com\/\">www.RandyKesterson.com<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8381\" style=\"width: 108px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Randy-Kesterson.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Randy-Kesterson.png 193w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Randy-Kesterson-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Randy-Kesterson-60x60.png 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 108px) 100vw, 108px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Randy Kesterson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the twenty years I have worked at the Vice President level, my role has included the call to coach members of my team and other extended teams.<\/p>\n<p>My wife Susan and I walk together quite often, and we use the time to catch up on things.\u00a0 One day Susan, a Certified Professional Coach, asked me how my week had gone.\u00a0 I told her, with much pride, how I had coached a team member who had come to me with a work related problem he was struggling to solve. \u00a0I explained how I had told him one of my best stories which included an explanation of how I had faced a similar problem and had dealt with it.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped in her tracks, looked at me with an incredulous expression on her face, chuckled a little, and said \u2026 \u201cyou\u2019re not coaching, you\u2019re just telling stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starting at that moment, I was determined to become a better executive coach.\u00a0 I am proud to said that I have completed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">Certified Professional Coach<\/a> program at the Center for Coaching Certification and, now armed with a proven executive coaching methodology, I am on the way to becoming a much better coach.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the greatest take-aways I had from the coach training include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coaching is defined by the International Coach Federation (ICF) as \u201c\u2026 a strategic partnership in which the coach empowers the client to clarify goals, create action plans, move past obstacles, and achieve what the client chooses.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A coach is NOT a: counselor, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, advisor, mentor, consultant, or friend.<\/li>\n<li>Coaching is client-focused, i.e., it\u2019s all about the client and it\u2019s critical to the coach-client relationship that we adhere to the coaching Code of Ethics.<\/li>\n<li>People think, feel, and prioritize differently and we, as coaches, adjust our process to the client\u2019s personality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What is next for me in my coaching journey?\u00a0 I plan to work as an executive coach upon retirement from industry.<\/p>\n<p>What I know now that I wish I had known before I started is that being a good coach hinges on being a REALLY good listener.\u00a0I guess we were given two ears and only one mouth for a reason!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Randy Kesterson, www.RandyKesterson.com During the twenty years I have worked at the Vice President level, my role has included the call to coach members &hellip;
