their words are a key difference in how they are perceived.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/coaching.html\">Coaching<\/a> uses clear direct language and powerful questioning, and this requires an awareness of word choices developed through coach training. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8362 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/dreamstimemaximum_67309344.jpg\" alt=\"Coaching Language for a Coaching Culture \" width=\"273\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How clear and direct is the word <em>might<\/em>?\u00a0 The expression \u201ccoulda, woulda, shoulda all over yourself\u201d implies limitation with each of the words.\u00a0\u00a0 Saying <em>try\u00a0<\/em>is giving permission not to follow through.\u00a0 Saying <em>need to\u00a0<\/em>creates resistance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The words in these examples emphasize a lack of confidence and a lack of conviction or personal motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Replace the limiting words <em>might, could, would, should, try\u00a0<\/em>with <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Change <em>need\u00a0<\/em>to <strong><em>want\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>or <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Say the same thing with the different words and reflect on how it feels different.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou should apply for more jobs.\u201d Chances are the person will defend that they are applying for many jobs and give barriers to applying for more.\u00a0 Alternatively, \u201cWhat is your game plan for job applications?\u201d opens the door for their proactive planning.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI am frustrated when I feel unheard because then it seems everything gets stuck.\u201d Using this language supports an opportunity for further discussion.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe should take out the garbage.\u201d Typically, this is a request for a specific though unidentified person to take out the garbage because it is a one-person job.\u00a0Instead, \u201cPlease take out the garbage now,\u201d is respectful and clear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Words make a difference and are a powerful tool developed during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coaching certification<\/a> for understanding, creating clear and direct communication, supporting client focus and motivation, and asking powerful questions.<\/p>\n<p>Equally significant is the absence of words \u2013 the power of silence.\u00a0 The next blog is on silence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is coaching language a science or an art?\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0In other words, based on research and experience, it is both.\u00a0 Word choice makes a difference.\u00a0 Consider &hellip;
