Remember being asked for advice, giving great suggestions, and then learning none of your ideas were used?

Consider this conversation between friends:
\nAna: Hi, how is work going?
\nBill: Okay, I guess.\u00a0 I wish there was an easier way to coordinate everyone\u2019s schedule.
\nAna: Why don\u2019t you just tell them the scheduled time and ask them to RSVP?
\nBill: Oh no \u2013 they are required to be there, so we have to find a time that works.
\nAna: So why don\u2019t you plan it on a set schedule?
\nBill: Well, with what is happening around here there is no way that would work.\u00a0 Thanks anyway for the idea.<\/p>\n

What is happening?\u00a0 Ana is simply unaware of the nuances of the situation, so the ideas are generic in nature.\u00a0 With coaching, the premise is that the individual is their own best expert, so the approach is to listen and ask questions.
\nAna: Hi, how is work going?
\nBill: Okay I guess.\u00a0 I wish there was an easier way to coordinate everyone\u2019s schedule.
\nAna: How do you do it now?
\nBill: I call each person and check on possible dates or availability.
\nAna: What do you recommend changing?
\nBill: I wish I could just talk to them all at once.
\nAna: What are the options for doing that?
\nBill: I don\u2019t know \u2013 this is what I am told to do.
\nAna: If it works better how will everyone feel about a change?
\nBill: Good, I guess.
\nAna: What kinds of changes are possible?
\nBill: We could schedule the next one when everyone is together in the first place.
\nAna: What else?
\nBill: I could email everyone simultaneously.
\nAna: What else?
\nBill: I could have a calendar everyone can access.
\nAna: What are you going to do?
\nBill: I am going to suggest to everyone when they are together that we schedule the next time then or that we have a calendar everyone can access.\u00a0 I think they will go for it, and if they don\u2019t I will ask if I can email everyone instead of having to call.
\nAna: Seems like you really know your stuff \u2013 good idea.
\nBill: Thanks.<\/p>\n
