{"id":8343,"date":"2019-05-30T11:03:25","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T11:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8343"},"modified":"2019-04-02T20:12:38","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T20:12:38","slug":"coaching-a-project-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/coaching-a-project-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaching a Project Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For example, a coaching client was responsible for overseeing a specific project.\u00a0 One of the managers on the project was simply uninterested in completing their work.\u00a0 This coaching client was at a loss as to how to make it happen because without direct authority over the manager, it became a power struggle.\u00a0 In a coaching session, we explored the situation.\u00a0 Questions I asked included:\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8344 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dreamstimemaximum_50934211.jpg\" alt=\"Coaching a Project Manager \" width=\"187\" height=\"187\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does this manager view the working relationship?<\/li>\n<li>What are the long-term benefits of a good working relationship?<\/li>\n<li>How are you able to help this manager in their job or career?<\/li>\n<li>What benefit is there for this manager to complete the work?<\/li>\n<li>What approach have you taken in the past?<\/li>\n<li>What approach will you take now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through answering these questions, the coaching client felt they had a better understanding of what was happening and created a plan of action to move forward.\u00a0 Specifically, the coaching client decided on these action steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule time for a social lunch with the manager.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the manager what they wanted to support their work and discuss ways to help.<\/li>\n<li>At the next project meeting, ask each team member to list the benefits of completing the project successfully.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the team to list remaining action items and create a timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a result of the plan the coaching client created, the client successfully rebuilt their relationship with the manager and saw results with the entire team.<\/p>\n<p>An added bonus: during the coaching, the client experienced coaching questions learned by their coach in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coaching certification<\/a> and realized the value of using the techniques in their conversations.\u00a0 When a professional coach models skills from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training.html\">coach training<\/a>, the client learns new coaching skills.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For example, a coaching client was responsible for overseeing a specific project.\u00a0 One of the managers on the project was simply uninterested in completing their &hellip;
