{"id":8210,"date":"2019-03-25T09:03:44","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T09:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=8210"},"modified":"2022-09-09T13:46:49","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T13:46:49","slug":"motivating-your-client-in-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/motivating-your-client-in-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Motivating Your Client in Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Beth Donovan <a href=\"https:\/\/bethdonovan.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/bethdonovan.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8212 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Beth-Donovan.jpg\" alt=\"Beth Donovan\" width=\"86\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Beth-Donovan.jpg 86w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Beth-Donovan-42x60.jpg 42w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 86px) 100vw, 86px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many clients come to me wanting reach a specific weight goal.\u00a0 Their expectations are often for me to put them on a diet like a weight loss clinic and tell them what to do for exercise because they misunderstand coaching.\u00a0 Something I learned in coach training is that telling the answer is far less effective than really coaching where I ask them questions and they find their own answer.\u00a0I have found this to be true.<\/p>\n<p>When coaching them, I ask them many powerful questions to get them to think.\u00a0 They are best served when they come to their own answers because they are their own best experts.\u00a0 Questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you want your outcome to be?<\/li>\n<li>How are you planning to achieve that?<\/li>\n<li>What is your motivation?<\/li>\n<li>What will it feel like when you reach your goal?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As coach, I listen for where their motivation comes from, internally or externally.\u00a0 If it\u2019s internally, they may say something like, \u201cI want to walk more easily without getting out of breath.\u201d\u00a0 Notice that the goal is to make themselves satisfied.\u00a0 If the goal is external, they may say something like, \u201cI want to get a boyfriend.\u201d\u00a0 Notice that the goal depends on someone else.\u00a0 That type of motivation is short-lived and is better redirected toward an internal motivation using powerful questions.\u00a0 In that case, I will say, \u201cThat\u2019s a great awareness.\u00a0 What does it mean for you personally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a coach it is essential to adjust to each individual.\u00a0 Stay in the moment with your client.\u00a0 Listen to who they are in that moment, in that space.\u00a0 Are they passive or aggressive, logic or emotion, and in what combination?\u00a0 Coach accordingly by asking powerful questions tailored for their style and know when to be silent.\u00a0 For example, passive\/logic\u00a0people may want more time to think, while aggressive\/ emotional people may jump right in and brain storm.<\/p>\n<p>Things to remember when coaching include, just as we all learned in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/en\/training.html\">coaching certification<\/a>, being present, asking powerful questions, and listening actively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Beth Donovan https:\/\/bethdonovan.com Many clients come to me wanting reach a specific weight goal.\u00a0 Their expectations are often for me to put them on &hellip;
