{"id":7773,"date":"2018-01-15T09:00:39","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T09:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=7773"},"modified":"2021-08-02T16:13:46","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T16:13:46","slug":"leadership-and-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/leadership-and-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Leadership and Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Karen Mildenhall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmleadership.com\">www.kmleadership.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Early in my career I believed, \u201cIf I\u2019m a good coach, I\u2019ll be a great leader.\u201d \u00a0Fortunately, I quickly discovered that to be a phenomenal leader, I needed to know how and when to coach and recognize when a leader is not a coach.<\/p>\n<p>Adept leaders demonstrate versatility and insight to converge the principles and skills of coaching into their daily lives and the capability to diverge from some of the behaviors coaches embrace.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6342 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Career-Coach-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Career-Coach-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Career-Coach-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Coaching Perspectives VII, my chapter titled Leadership &amp; Coaching explores the principles and skills that coaches and leaders share and where high-performance converges. \u00a0This chapter also points out where leaders and coaches diverge. \u00a0The examples included in the chapter are real-life experiences from my career.<\/p>\n<p>How Does It Matter?<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wrote this chapter so that you can quickly learn and apply the six principles and nine skills coaches and leaders share. \u00a0When you interweave these skills and principles, you create a pattern for success. \u00a0We all want to succeed!<\/p>\n<p>What is the short version?\u00a0 Breaking it down into bite-sized chunks, we explore how to look, listen, and ask. \u00a0These are deliberate behaviors that you as a leader and\/or coach utilize. \u00a0Given enough practice, you will listen with focus, recognize different styles, and quickly adjust to connect, ask short and insightful open questions, clarify what you hear, and use positive language.<\/p>\n<p>Divergence?\u00a0 Yes, effective leaders diverge from the principles and behaviors they share with coaches in several ways. \u00a0Can you think of at least four differences in a leaders vs. a coach&#8217;s behavior?
