{"id":7694,"date":"2017-10-30T09:00:15","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T09:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=7694"},"modified":"2017-10-28T17:34:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-28T17:34:45","slug":"coaching-skills-for-performance-improvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/coaching-skills-for-performance-improvement\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaching Skills for Performance Improvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/establishing-a-coaching-business-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>As a continuation of the previous blogs, this one focuses on coaching skills for performance improvement.\u00a0 Completing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\">coach training<\/a> develops these skills for use in many roles in addition to those of a coach seeking coaching certification.<\/p>\n<p>To simplify the example, C is the person who completed the coach training.\u00a0 P is the person with whom they are talking.<\/p>\n<p>The scenario: An employee (P) has been sent to HR (C) because they are not meeting performance criteria.<\/p>\n<p>C: Hello P, how are you doing?<br \/>\nP: Not so good I guess if I am here.<\/p>\n<p>C: What is your understanding of the reason you are here?<br \/>\nP: My boss is not happy.<\/p>\n<p>C: Let\u2019s figure this out together.\u00a0 What is your understanding of what your boss wants?<br \/>\nP: Well, she wants me to submit my reports by the deadlines.\u00a0 It is just that I have to get information from others to do it.<\/p>\n<p>C: That makes sense.\u00a0 What are your options for getting the information on time?<br \/>\nP: Well, I guess I can send a reminder a day before.\u00a0 Maybe I can ask my boss to tell them they have to get it in.\u00a0 Or I can let them know if it is not in I will use the status from the previous week with a note that no updates were provided.<\/p>\n<p>C: Those are great ideas.\u00a0 What else will it take for you to make your boss happy?<br \/>\nP: Well, she says I am too rude.<\/p>\n<p>C: How can you change that so you are polite and respectful?<br \/>\nP: I guess I just have to think before I talk.<\/p>\n<p>C: Good idea.\u00a0 Let\u2019s explore that thinking together.\u00a0 What are examples of the rude language.<br \/>\nP: Um, well, I guess I kinda told someone they were stupid.<\/p>\n<p>C: OK.\u00a0 What else?<br \/>\nP: Well, I told someone if they didn\u2019t turn their report in on time they were getting fired.<\/p>\n<p>C: OK.\u00a0what else?<br \/>\nP: That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>C: OK.\u00a0 What will you say instead in the future.future?<br \/>\nP: Um, maybe that if they have questions they can ask?<\/p>\n<p>C: Great.\u00a0 What else?<br \/>\nP: Ask why they aren\u2019t submitting their report?<\/p>\n<p>C: Excellent.\u00a0 What else?<br \/>\nP: Maybe offer to help?<\/p>\n<p>C: Wonderful.\u00a0 Seems you have a great plan.\u00a0 How do you feel about it?<br \/>\nP: Well, I guess that is how I want people to talk to me so it feels better.<\/p>\n<p>C: Absolutely.\u00a0 What will your boss think?<br \/>\nP: I guess he will be happy?<\/p>\n<p>C: It seems you have done a good job of figuring out how to handle this.\u00a0 When will you make this happen?<br \/>\nP: Right away.<\/p>\n<p>C: Perfect.\u00a0 Please send me an email outlining your plan by 2 today so we know it is handled.<br \/>\nP: OK.\u00a0 Thanks.<\/p>\n<p>In this conversation, instead of telling the HR person used coaching skills so that the employee essentially developed their own performance improvement plan plus committed to writing it up.\u00a0 This increases the likelihood of follow-through and also supports employee ownership for addressing the concern.\u00a0 Coaching questions and language along with the approach of a solution focus while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/empowering-takes-skill-and-patience\/\">empowering<\/a> others works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a continuation of the previous blogs, this one focuses on coaching skills for performance improvement.\u00a0 Completing coach training develops these skills for use in &hellip;
