{"id":7652,"date":"2017-09-18T09:05:48","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T09:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=7652"},"modified":"2025-05-29T18:44:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T18:44:16","slug":"being-a-respectful-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/being-a-respectful-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Being a Respectful Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Cathy Liska<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to be respectful as a coach?\u00a0 Respect includes respecting yourself and respecting others.\u00a0 Respect means caring about how you take care of yourself and how you treat people.\u00a0 Respect means being a true professional when working as a coach and that demonstrates caring about yourself with the proper coach training and caring about clients with the proper preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Apply the many elements covered during coach training to respect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning and enhancing the <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/credentialing\/coaching-competencies\/icf-core-competencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Core Competencies<\/a> of a Coach is respectful because it enhances the quality of the services you provide.<\/li>\n<li>Living the Coaching Code of Ethics demonstrates respect because as a professional service provider knowing and demonstrating the nuances of Ethics is essential.<\/li>\n<li>Focusing on the client is respectful because it really is all about them.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a safe space for the client to open up and talk is respecting the purpose of coaching.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7081 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/coaching-is-a-top-personal-competency-2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"coaching is a top personal competency 2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/coaching-is-a-top-personal-competency-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/coaching-is-a-top-personal-competency-2-476x473.jpg 476w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/coaching-is-a-top-personal-competency-2-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Really listening is respecting the job of a coach.<\/li>\n<li>Asking short, simple questions is respecting the client&#8217;s abilities, control, and choices.<\/li>\n<li>Empowering the client to explore, consider different possibilities, identify possible challenges, discover alternatives, and choose independently is respectful because that is the service they are paying to receive.<\/li>\n<li>Partnering with the client for accountability is respectful because it supports their success.<\/li>\n<li>Affirming client progress and success plus asking them how they are acknowledging themselves is respectful because it builds confidence and motivation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ultimately, demonstrating respect as a coach means being a professional.\u00a0 Being a professional means getting the appropriate training, learning and using the Code of Ethics, and skillfully applying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/the-importance-of-coaching-competencies\/\">coaching competencies<\/a> taught in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">coaching certification<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Cathy Liska What does it mean to be respectful as a coach?\u00a0 Respect includes respecting yourself and respecting others.\u00a0 Respect means caring about how &hellip;
