{"id":7618,"date":"2017-08-07T09:05:55","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T09:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=7618"},"modified":"2017-07-16T19:08:05","modified_gmt":"2017-07-16T19:08:05","slug":"the-paradox-of-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/the-paradox-of-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"The Paradox of Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Paradox of Coaching<\/p>\n<p>By Cathy Liska\u00a0\u00a0 Cathy@CoachCert.com<\/p>\n<p>Coaching skills can be used in mentoring, managing, counseling or therapy, consulting, and leading.<\/p>\n<p>Mentoring, managing, counseling or therapy, consulting, and leading are inappropriate when coaching.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\">Coaching certification<\/a> helps coaches develop the coaching competencies for the work.\u00a0 Coaching certification also helps people in the other roles because the skills are applicable in their work.<\/p>\n<p>To explore this fully, let\u2019s start with working definitions.<\/p>\n<p>Definitions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mentoring \u2013 passing on wisdom and experience while also giving advice and helping make connections<\/li>\n<li>Managing \u2013 responsibility for giving direction and also evaluating performance<\/li>\n<li>Counseling \u2013 collecting history, assessing, determining condition of mental health, and providing guidance<\/li>\n<li>Therapy \u2013 treatment of a disorder to resolve problematic behaviors or feelings<\/li>\n<li>Consulting \u2013 assessing the situation and providing expert advice<\/li>\n<li>Leading \u2013 sharing a vision, pushing for and inspiring action, making decisions<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\">Coaching<\/a> \u2013 partnering to empower a client in exploring their possibilities, planning to move past challenges, developing their strategies, creating their own action plan, and managing their accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Serving in the roles of mentor, manager, consultant, or leader usually comes after a level of education and years of experience.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as a Counselor or Therapist requires very specific and specialized training and licensure.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming a coach involves coaching-specific training.\u00a0 To become a member in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachfederation.org\">International Coach Federation<\/a>, ICF, which is seen as the gold standard, requires 60 hours of training.\u00a0 The ICF approves training programs based on the teaching of the 11 Core Competencies of a Coach and the Code of Ethics.<\/p>\n<p>In the next post we will further explore the difference between coaching as a skill and professional coaching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Paradox of Coaching By Cathy Liska\u00a0\u00a0 Cathy@CoachCert.com Coaching skills can be used in mentoring, managing, counseling or therapy, consulting, and leading.
