{"id":6942,"date":"2016-10-20T11:00:46","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=6942"},"modified":"2016-09-28T15:44:15","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T15:44:15","slug":"be-proactive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/be-proactive\/","title":{"rendered":"Be Proactive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/be-proactive-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/be-proactive-jpg-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"be proactive\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/be-proactive-jpg-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/be-proactive-jpg-480x480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/be-proactive-jpg-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>To be proactive means influencing outcomes or making them happen through action.\u00a0 It involves thinking ahead in terms of what is happening, choosing what you want, and initiating action to create the outcome desired.\u00a0 Being proactive is the first habit in Stephen Covey\u2019s book \u201c7 Habits of Highly Successful People\u201d.\u00a0 The opposite of proactive is reactive, meaning waiting for someone else or for something else.\u00a0 Being proactive means taking control of what is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Coaching is designed to support creating meaningful change, and this calls for being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/coaching-for-new-year%E2%80%99s-resolutions-%E2%80%93-part-3-proactive-action-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\">proactive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforcoachingcertification.com\/certified-professional-coach-training\/program-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coaching certification<\/a> focuses on learning the competencies and a process for partnering with clients so that they proactively achieve what they choose.\u00a0 Research shows and average return on investment in coaching to be 600% so clearly coaching works.<\/p>\n<p>Coaches incorporate a multitude of tools and techniques in support of their clients being proactive and creating the meaningful change they choose.\u00a0 Significant amongst these are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Forward focus \u2013 coaching is about the future and what clients want to achieve or change<\/li>\n<li>Positive \u2013 coaching language is positive and this lends itself to being proactive<\/li>\n<li>Exploration \u2013 coaches listen deeply, are aware of how their client is thinking and perceiving, and then ask questions so clients expand their thinking and consider different possibilities or perspectives<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/smart-goals.htm\" target=\"_blank\">SMART Goals<\/a> \u2013 coaches ask clients to choose and define their Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Resonant, and Time-bound goals<\/li>\n<li>Strategy and Planning \u2013 coaches ask questions and partner with clients to develop strategies and plan action steps<\/li>\n<li>Follow-through \u2013 coaches are accountability partners for following through on commitments and also for acknowledging progress and success along the way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coaching competency is essential as a coach and coaching competency is helpful for everyone.\u00a0 When working with a coach, observe the behaviors they model and reflect on how you want to incorporate the skills you value in your life and work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To be proactive means influencing outcomes or making them happen through action.\u00a0 It involves thinking ahead in terms of what is happening, choosing what you &hellip;
