Bazerman submitted a report (<a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/todd_rogers\/files\/future_lock-in._future_implementation_increases_selection.pdf\">http:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/todd_rogers\/files\/future_lock-in._future_implementation_increases_selection.pdf<\/a>) at Harvard Business School on reason for procrastination.\u00a0 When people know they \u201cshould\u201d do something, if it is in the future they are more likely to say they will do it.\u00a0 If it is more short-term they are more likely to procrastinate.\u00a0 The logic is that while we prefer being the ideal we act on what is easier or more comfortable.\u00a0 Consider this: the benefits to procrastinating are immediately gratifying and the cost of procrastinating is hidden or deferred.<\/p>\n<p>A Washington Post blog talks about fear as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/procrastination-a-challenge-for-coaches-%E2%80%93-part-1of-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">reason<\/a> for procrastination.\u00a0 The blog goes on and cites other studies and includes a reference to the information above.\u00a0 Focus on the fear for a moment \u2013 is it fear of failure or fear of success?\u00a0 It may even be a fear of doing something tedious or boring.<\/p>\n<p>What techniques help move past procrastination?\u00a0 Applying the insights from the above research nicely parallels what is taught in a coaching certification program.\u00a0 Ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the ideal outcome?<\/li>\n<li>What are the barriers?<\/li>\n<li>How will you move past the barriers?<\/li>\n<li>What resources will you use?<\/li>\n<li>What actions steps will you take?<\/li>\n<li>When will you take the action steps?<\/li>\n<li>How do you prefer to manage your accountability?<\/li>\n<li>Describe your life when you complete these action steps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These questions focus first on the reward \u2013 the ideal outcome.\u00a0 Next the questions define reasons for procrastination, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/focus-on-the-solution-coaching-skills-for-daily-application\/\" target=\"_blank\">consequences<\/a>.\u00a0 Then the questions develop a plan for moving forward.\u00a0 Then a question supports follow-through by planning accountability.\u00a0 In coach training we ask for a complete description of what will be seen, heard, and felt when the actions are completed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is procrastination?\u00a0 It means to put off, delay, or defer doing something.
