{"id":6869,"date":"2016-09-05T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T09:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=6869"},"modified":"2016-08-25T18:45:54","modified_gmt":"2016-08-25T18:45:54","slug":"the-challenge-shift-from-passive-to-assertive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/the-challenge-shift-from-passive-to-assertive\/","title":{"rendered":"The Challenge: Shift from Passive to Assertive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/passive-v-assertive-challenge-blog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/passive-v-assertive-challenge-blog-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Challenge: Shift from Passive to Assertive\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/passive-v-assertive-challenge-blog-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/passive-v-assertive-challenge-blog-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>A passive communicator is someone who waits for others to speak first.\u00a0 Often a passive communicator will refrain from saying anything and then, perhaps later, express a thought.\u00a0 Passive communicators are hesitant to stand up for themselves and struggle with setting healthy boundaries or saying no.\u00a0 70% of people are primarily passive communicators.<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforcoachingcertification.com\/certified-professional-coach-training\/program-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\">coach training<\/a> the participants learn that when coaching it is their job to empower the client.\u00a0 Additionally, coaches ask questions and listen.\u00a0 That means if a client is a passive communicator often the coach is respectfully silent while they are thinking.\u00a0 Additionally, many coaches partner with their clients both for them to open up during coaching sessions and also for them to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/Assertiveness.htm\" target=\"_blank\">assertive<\/a> in interactions they have at work.<\/p>\n<p>Coaches partner with their clients to create shifts in thinking and doing by asking questions.\u00a0 For the shift from passive to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/5-communication-tools-for-coaches\/\" target=\"_blank\">assertive<\/a> here are example questions to ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is a comfortable way to engage in the conversation?<\/li>\n<li>How do you want to ensure you express your thoughts?<\/li>\n<li>What are the benefits of sharing your thoughts?<\/li>\n<li>How do you help others by sharing what you think?<\/li>\n<li>How does your opinion support success?<\/li>\n<li>What can you comfortably say?<\/li>\n<li>How can you start saying what you think?<\/li>\n<li>What words do you want to use?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How does this benefit the coaching client?\u00a0 By creating awareness of the value they bring when they express their ideas.\u00a0 An additional benefit is that this is supporting them to demonstrate their worth\u00a0and be confident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A passive communicator is someone who waits for others to speak first.\u00a0 Often a passive communicator will refrain from saying anything and then, perhaps later, &hellip;
