{"id":6848,"date":"2016-08-25T11:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T11:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=6848"},"modified":"2023-04-06T18:35:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T18:35:56","slug":"the-challenge-shift-from-reactive-to-proactive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/the-challenge-shift-from-reactive-to-proactive\/","title":{"rendered":"The Challenge: Shift from Reactive to Proactive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/7K0A0014-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4649 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/7K0A0014-21-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Challenge: Shift from Reactive to Proactive\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Sometimes, when coaching, a client is reacting to circumstances instead of planning intentionally.\u00a0 As a coach, part of the process expertise learned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching certification<\/a> is shifting the client focus to being proactive.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for being proactive seem obvious: if someone is reactive they are giving up control and if they are proactive at a minimum they can influence outcomes.\u00a0 Being proactive means making choices.\u00a0 Proactive people think ahead and plan their actions.\u00a0 Proactivity is forward focused and that is the intention of coaching.<\/p>\n<p>The way a coach creates a shift to being proactive is through the questions.\u00a0 Here are a few to start with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is possible for you to do?<\/li>\n<li>What is within your control?<\/li>\n<li>How can you influence that?<\/li>\n<li>What steps can you take?<\/li>\n<li>How do you want to advance?<\/li>\n<li>What level of input do you have?<\/li>\n<li>What level of influence do you want to create?<\/li>\n<li>How can you increase your possibilities?<\/li>\n<li>What options do you have?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Being reactive means waiting for someone else or waiting for something else.\u00a0 Being proactive means initiating action.\u00a0 While there are circumstances with multiple limitations, a proactive approach means focusing on what is possible, creating strategies, and being specific with action steps.\u00a0 Sounds like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/coaches-focus-forward-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, when coaching, a client is reacting to circumstances instead of planning intentionally.\u00a0 As a coach, part of the process expertise learned in coaching certification &hellip;
