Back to the brothers: both played musical instruments.\u00a0 Brendan was a decent saxophone player.\u00a0 Kevin was extremely talented with the violin and clarinet.\u00a0 Brendan did enough to get by and was mostly interested in opportunities to be a show-off.\u00a0 Kevin was invested in the music and wanted to advance with higher-level instruction; advanced training was unavailable.<\/p>\n

Brendan\u2019s teacher said, \u201cYou are pretty good at it but you could do better.\u201d\u00a0 Brendan thought, \u201cYeah, sure, but\u2026 so what, this is all right for now and I just don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Kevin the teacher said \u201cYou really have a talent.\u201d\u00a0 Classmates told him, \u201cI wish I could play like that!\u201d\u00a0 Kevin thought, \u201cWell, I am going to enjoy it because I am good at it plus I really dig this music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over time Brendan\u2019s disinterest grew and as soon as he completed his required classes he stopped playing music.\u00a0 Kevin did as well as possible with what was available and had fun with it.<\/p>\n

When the teacher said \u201cbut\u201d Brendan dismissed the first part of the statement and focused on the remainder.\u00a0 He decided he didn\u2019t care if he could do better and it wasn\u2019t worth it.\u00a0 Kevin felt good about his skill and focused on enjoying the music.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Coaching Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Be very intentional with word choice<\/a> and model language that conveys confidence<\/a> and is positive.\u00a0 Ask clients to commit to their goals instead of a maybe or hesitating by using doubtful words.\u00a0 This means instead of saying might or possibly, say, \u201cyou are good and you are improving,\u201d expressing positive support and belief in future possibilities.<\/p>\n
