\"Coach_Transparency_About_Confidentiality\"<\/a>The International Coaching Federation<\/a> defines client and coach, then provides the standards for confidentiality.<\/p>\n

What is said between the coach and the client is confidential.\u00a0 The question that arises is, “Who is the client?”\u00a0 The mistake some make is thinking that the person or company paying for the coaching<\/a> is the client.\u00a0 The reality is that the person being coached is the client.\u00a0 This means that there are actually separate agreements with the payer, who is the sponsor, and the individual being coached, who is the client.\u00a0 Additionally, there is an advance discussion of confidentiality and how the exchange of information is managed.\u00a0 Specifically, unless there is a threat of harm or an unreported crime, the client must first agree to any information that is shared with the sponsor.<\/p>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

A client requests coaching through a company coaching program<\/a>.\u00a0 They work with the coach over a period of six months.\u00a0 The client’s boss approaches the coach directly and says that since the cost is coming from their budget they want a full report on what is being discussed.<\/p>\n

Ideally the agreement with the sponsor transparently defines the confidentiality.\u00a0 The Code of Ethics<\/a> is transparent and cites: \u201cI will maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality with all client and sponsor information. I will have a clear agreement or contract before releasing information to another person, unless required by law.\u201d <\/em>and \u201cI will have a clear agreement upon how coaching information will be exchanged among coach, client, and sponsor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

What the coach can do is work with the coaching client to co-create a report that the client either delivers to their boss them self or agrees to have released to their boss by the coach.\u00a0 In this way the transparency of the agreement and the guidelines in the Code of Ethics are maintained. \u00a0The confidentiality of the client is protected, and the boss receives a report.\u00a0 Often this in turn protects all of the workplace relationships too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
