{"id":5117,"date":"2014-07-07T06:03:13","date_gmt":"2014-07-07T06:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=5117"},"modified":"2023-05-22T18:29:37","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T18:29:37","slug":"what-do-you-do-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/what-do-you-do-again\/","title":{"rendered":"What Do You Do Again?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/shades-of-grey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5119\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/shades-of-grey.jpg\" alt=\"What Do You Do Again?\" width=\"179\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/shades-of-grey.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/shades-of-grey-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/shades-of-grey-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>Differences between coaches and psychologists, or coaches and advisors, or coaches and trainers, are often gray from the outside looking in.<\/p>\n<p>Some years ago I read this riddle: \u201cHow many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?\u201d The answer is ONE, but the light bulb has to want to change.\u00a0 Swap the word <em>psychologists<\/em> for <strong><em>coaches<\/em><\/strong> and the phrase fits like a glove in the coaching world.<\/p>\n<p>While some differences are easier to point out, there are others that are more challenging.\u00a0 An obvious one is the difference between a psychologist and a coach.\u00a0 A psychologist is a licensed professional who is trained to assess, diagnose, and give advice; the psychologist works with people to help them become whole.\u00a0 A coach is a trained professional who partners with individuals that are whole so they self-assess, explore their opportunities and barriers, develop their strategy, and execute their plan to work toward goals they choose.<\/p>\n<p>For the difference between the coach and the trainer, here are possible answers:<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I seek out the areas where I see a plain need for training.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I am more often sought.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I market through a prepared pitch and an auto-commercial.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I market by answering the client\u2019s questions \u2013 whatever they may be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I am given the training topic and request full design autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, both the topic and the design belong to my client.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I am the sage on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I am the supporting partner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I test knowledge with pop quizzes, tests, or reports.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I support self-evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I expect a minimum score.<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I ask the client how they measure their results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a trainer, I provide knowledge to highlight the end goal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforcoachingsolutions.com\/\">As a coach<\/a>, I elicit expertise from within the client.<\/p>\n<p>To shed light within, to achieve clarity for separating the grays into darker and lighter, (remember, it is never black and white) is one of the fundamental job requirements of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/how-to-become-a-coach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coach<\/a> and one so critical, it is employed before the job even begins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Differences between coaches and psychologists, or coaches and advisors, or coaches and trainers, are often gray from the outside looking in.
