{"id":5079,"date":"2014-06-11T06:03:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-11T06:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=5079"},"modified":"2022-09-14T16:28:02","modified_gmt":"2022-09-14T16:28:02","slug":"science-of-coaching-conference-insights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/science-of-coaching-conference-insights\/","title":{"rendered":"Science of Coaching Conference Insights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/bb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/bb-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"Science of Coaching Conference Insights\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Coaching Federation<\/a>\u2019s Advance conference, the Science of Coaching, was an amazing, affirming, and humbling experience, so this week the blogs are dedicated to sharing insights.<\/p>\n<p>Key points from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmKBKXJS92Q\">Dr. Ben Palmer<\/a>, an expert on Emotional Intelligence (EI), include, \u201cEmotions influence decisions, behavior, and performance.\u201d and \u201cThere\u2019s a direct link between an organization\u2019s financial performance and the way people feel in the workplace.\u201d\u00a0 CEO and Founder of Genos, he has an assessment tool for EI.\u00a0 During the conference, one of his certified practitioners did a live demonstration of coaching a client on their results from the assessment.\u00a0 The significant coaching techniques modeled included being very positive, supportive, accepting, and encouraging of the client.\u00a0 The coach asked the client what was desired from the session, and then at the end verified the client had the result \u2013 in this case a specific skill with an actionable focus to improve.<\/p>\n<p>An illustration shared by Josh Allan Dykstra, who spoke on Energy Intelligence, says it all.\u00a0\u00a0The illustration is two over-lapping circles with one of the circles described as areas of competence and the other as areas that energize.\u00a0 The overlapping area is where you find peak performance.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line, sometimes we get so focused on our strengths that we forget to hone it further and focus on the strengths that we like, that energize us, for the peak performance.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Betz, BEabove Leadership, spoke on How Coaching Can Use Neuroscience to Grow as a Profession \u2013 because \u201cif it works there will be a brain explanation as to why.\u201d\u00a0 She gave the \u201cBig 4 for Coaching:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Neuroplasticity \u2013 the more we use a neural pathway the more developed it becomes<\/li>\n<li>Ask Don\u2019t Tell \u2013 asking enhances cognitive and perceptual openness<\/li>\n<li>Stress and the Higher Brain \u2013 stress impairs functioning and coaching reduces stress<\/li>\n<li>Integration \u2013 lower brain with higher brain, left with right hemispheres, and front to back\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>She then shared \u201cfour things you can say about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/is-coaching-right-for-me-take-the-quiz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching<\/a> and neuroscience:<\/p>\n<p>1. Coaching helps create positive new neural pathways, which leads to lasting, sustainable change.<\/p>\n<p>2. Coaching and being \u201ccoach-like\u201d tends to put people in a state where their brains are more open to learning, visioning, and growth.<\/p>\n<p>3. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tools of professional coaching<\/a> have been scientifically proven to reduce stress, which leads to more sophisticated thinking, emotional intelligence, empathy and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>4. Coaching helps build crucial connections between various parts of the brain.
