\"The<\/a>The ICF Core Competencies<\/a> include clear, direct language and powerful questioning, and these competencies require an awareness of our word choices.<\/p>\n

How clear and direct is the word might<\/em>?\u00a0 Are you familiar with the expression \u201ccoulda, woulda, shoulda all over yourself\u201d and the implication?\u00a0 \u00a0Saying try<\/em> is giving permission not<\/strong> to follow through.\u00a0 Saying need to<\/em> creates resistance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The words in these examples emphasize a lack of confidence and a lack of conviction or motivation.<\/p>\n

Replace the limiting words might, could, would, should, try<\/em> with will<\/em>.\u00a0 Change need<\/em> to want<\/em>.\u00a0 Say the same thing with the different words and reflect on how it feels different.\u00a0 Now you have made the change to language that is clear and direct.<\/p>\n

What constitutes a powerful question? A question that provokes thought, expands or challenges thinking, promotes being proactive, and affirms possibilities. Questions that start with the words is, are, any, can, do, will<\/em> are closed so instead ask what<\/em> or how<\/em> questions. Asking why<\/em> invites a defensive answer so instead ask, \u201cWhat are the reasons?\u201d Or, \u201cWhat is behind that?\u201d Questions<\/a> with lots of words lose impact. Short, simple, open questions are powerful.<\/p>\n

Words make a difference and are a powerful tool for understanding<\/a>, creating clear and direct communication, supporting client focus and motivation, and asking powerful questions.\u00a0 Equally significant is the absence of words \u2013 the power of silence.
