\"\"<\/a>From the International Coach Federation, ICF, Code of Ethics<\/a> in Section 2 under Conflicts of Interest it says, \u201cAs a coach: 9) I will seek to avoid conflicts of interest and potential conflicts of interest and openly disclose any such conflicts. I will offer to remove myself when such a conflict arises.\u201d<\/p>\n

From a learning perspective, think transparency.\u00a0 Transparency about what might be perceived as a conflict, transparency about known conflicts, transparency about coaching roles, ethics, and relationships.<\/p>\n

To facilitate addressing a possible conflict of interest, in the Center for Coaching Certification<\/a> class on ethics the below decision tree is provided:\"coaching<\/a><\/p>\n

As a coach<\/a>, start with the first question: \u201cCan I effectively coach this client?\u201d\u00a0 Follow the tree based on your answers.\u00a0 If you answer yes, the question, \u201cCould this be perceived as a conflict?\u201d significantly includes the word \u2018perceived\u2019.\u00a0 As a generalization, if you are asking the question chances are the answer is yes.\u00a0 If your answer to the first question is no, the question, \u201cWould telling the client the specific conflict potentially add to or create a problem?\u201d significantly includes the word \u2018potentially\u2019.\u00a0 Again, as a generalization, if you are asking the question chances are the answer is yes.<\/p>\n

In a coaching program, prevent some conflicts by educating the participants and the organization on coaching roles and ethics in advance.\u00a0 Then, if a conflict arises such as a manager or supervisor wanting information disclosed for example, simply refer them to the program manual and Code of Ethics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
