{"id":4922,"date":"2014-03-03T06:03:04","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T06:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=4922"},"modified":"2022-09-18T17:50:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-18T17:50:00","slug":"practice-asking-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/practice-asking-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Practice Asking Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"8\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8-106x60.jpg 106w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/8.jpg 798w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>by guest blogger Mikayla Phan<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I am practicing from my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching class<\/a> is asking more questions.\u00a0 For me, I feel this is really important.\u00a0 Today with my son was a good opportunity because he was stuck on a particularly challenging assignment and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/adhd-coach\/add-coach-program-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADHD<\/a> was making the task initiation difficult.\u00a0 Instead of telling him about the subject, I asked him to share what he knew.\u00a0 Instead of telling him a good place to start structuring the essay, I asked him what he thought.\u00a0 In addition to him looking at me funny because Mom doesn\u2019t usually talk this way, I noticed he was immediately relaxed from his slightly panicky state earlier.\u00a0 It allowed him to explore his thoughts out loud and answer his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/commonly-asked-questions-with-answers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">questions<\/a>, even though I was asking them. \u00a0We were able to escape the usual power struggle that so often come with these teenage years.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to asking more questions these days as a result of my coaching class, I am also wording my questions differently than before.\u00a0 I focus on eliminating definitive words and using more possibility words.\u00a0 Instead of saying something like, \u201cWhy is it hard for you?\u201d I change the wording to, \u201cWhat are the challenges for you?\u201d\u00a0 This allows the focus to change from being assumptive to being investigative.\u00a0 One result of this at home is that my son is more comfortable coming to me with questions on his homework and when he is stuck.<\/p>\n<p>I have noticed I really like the new changes I am making in my communication patterns, and I believe it will become easy fairly quickly because I like how it feels.\u00a0 It feels more natural, and I like the results I am seeing.<\/p>\n<p>Because today was particularly hectic, I decided to order carry out Chinese food on a whim today.\u00a0 Who would have thunk &#8211;
