{"id":4914,"date":"2014-02-24T06:03:55","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T06:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=4914"},"modified":"2023-05-22T18:33:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T18:33:35","slug":"listen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/listen\/","title":{"rendered":"Listen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Mikayla-Phan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Mikayla-Phan-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mikayla Phan\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Mikayla-Phan-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Mikayla-Phan-47x60.jpg 47w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Mikayla-Phan.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/a>by guest blogger Mikayla Phan<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, the general definition of \u201clisten\u201d is to \u201cpay attention to someone or something in order to hear what is being said, sung, played, etc.\u201d\u00a0 It expands with another slightly more detailed form: \u201cto hear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/video-testimonials.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what someone has said<\/a> and understand that it is serious, important, or true.\u201d\u00a0 When I look further, I discover the very simple description of the word as an intransitive verb, \u201cto pay attention to sound &lt;<em>listen<\/em> to music&gt;.\u201d\u00a0 However, it does give an alternative form, one that is a bit more inclusive: \u201cto hear something with thoughtful attention<strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/is-coaching-right-for-me-take-the-quiz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">give consideration<\/a> &lt;<em>listen<\/em> to a plea&gt;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, on the website for the US Department of State, there is a section under \u201cActive Listening\u201d.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/m\/a\/os\/65759.htm\">http:\/\/www.state.gov\/m\/a\/os\/65759.htm<\/a>)\u00a0 Much to my surprise, it features the Chinese character for the word \u201clisten\u201d.\u00a0 You see, having lived and learned the Chinese culture in Beijing, China for over a decade, as well as having a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Chinese history, I am thrilled to see a bridge like this formed between East and West.\u00a0 As outlined on their website, the Chinese character for the word \u201clisten\u201d is a pictograph, as are all Chinese characters.\u00a0 On the left side is the symbol for \u201cear\u201d, and on the right side is the concept of the individual, showing the symbols for \u201ceyes\u201d, \u201cundivided attention\u201d, and \u201cheart\u201d.\u00a0 In other words, the word for \u201clisten\u201d indicates that true listening is achieved with much more than just the ears.\u00a0 The Chinese were telling us that active, or intentional listening is done with all of our senses.\u00a0 It involves not only our ears (and both ears!), but also our eyes, conscious mind, and emotional connectivity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by guest blogger Mikayla Phan According to the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, the general definition of \u201clisten\u201d is to \u201cpay attention to someone or something in order &hellip;
