Active listening is focusing completely on both what a client is saying and is not saying within the context of who they are to gain understanding of their meaning.\u00a0 In coaching, the listening is to help\"cc5a\"<\/a> the client gain clarity and not to become engaged in the story.\u00a0 Taking this competency to a higher level means cumulative listening that also extends to hearing the future develop.\u00a0 Highly effective listening involves hearing the client\u2019s expertise and their limiting beliefs.<\/p>\n

If a coach is listening through their own filters \u2013 perceptions and models \u2013 then they are not actively listening.\u00a0 If a coach is focused on analyzing, identifying problems, or responding then they will fail the active listening competency.\u00a0 Passing evaluation of this competency will not happen unless the coach is listening with awareness of the client\u2019s filters instead of their own.\u00a0 It also calls for \"cc5b\"<\/a>the coach to incorporate the nuances of the client\u2019s language when rephrasing and in the conversation.<\/p>\n

When a coach is effectively using active listening, the client feels heard and understood.\u00a0 This enhances their willingness to be open and to take the conversation to a deeper level.\u00a0 This in turn supports competencies three and four \u2013 establishing trust and intimacy and coaching presence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
