\"questions\"<\/a>In the previous blog post, the International Coaching Federation<\/a> definition of coaching and their table explaining evaluation of coaching, highlights that coaching is different than advising or mentoring.\u00a0 Very specifically, it is the role of the coach to listen and to ask powerful questions.\u00a0 More than what most consider listening and asking questions, Coaching requires developing and enhancing these and other skills.\u00a0 There are Core Competencies<\/a> in four categories for coaching:<\/p>\n

Setting the Foundation<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ethical guidelines<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coaching agreement<\/p>\n

Co-Creating the Relationship<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trust and intimacy<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coaching presence<\/p>\n

Communicating Effectively<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Active listening<\/p>\n

6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Powerful questioning<\/p>\n

7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Direct communication<\/p>\n

Facilitating Learning and Results<\/p>\n

8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Creating awareness<\/p>\n

9)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Designing actions<\/p>\n

10)\u00a0 Planning and goal setting<\/p>\n

What does this mean?\u00a0 Coaching starts with a coach knowing and following the ethical guidelines.\u00a0 This requires understanding specifically the coaching Code of Ethics because it is different than other codes of ethics in significant areas.\u00a0 Then the coach establishes a coaching agreement with their client by discussing the roles, relationship, ethics, and process then signing an agreement with the client.\u00a0 Establishing trust and intimacy includes the coach providing a safe space for the client to talk openly.\u00a0 Being present means being in the moment with the client and flexing to them.\u00a0 Effective communication is essential and includes listening, asking powerful questions, and clear, direct language.\u00a0 During coaching sessions, the coach empowers the client by creating awareness, having them design their actions, empowering, planning and goal setting, and serving as an accountability partner.<\/p>\n

In coaching, the client truly is their own best expert and it is the coach\u2019s responsibility to elicit the answers from the client.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
