The International Coaching Federation, ICF, publishes Core Competencies<\/a>.\u00a0 One of these is \u00a0listening.\u00a0 As a coach, listening is one of the most important tasks for coach to excel in: really hearing what is said and what is not said too.\u00a0 When a coach listens well, and is open and accepting, then the coach is prepared to effectively coach their client.<\/p>\n

As a coach, when you listen to people, be aware of their intended meaning and then rephrase what they say with clear, direct language and their key words.\u00a0 Then they can verify your understanding, and they will know you have heard them.\u00a0 For a client, the added benefit is clarity in their own thinking.\u00a0 As a coach, the added benefit is that the act of rephrasing requires effective listening, so you improve at this essential competency.<\/p>\n

As a coach, to practice and enhance your listening skills, when you are at a networking event or socializing, see how much you remember \u2013 peoples\u2019 names and information they share. \u00a0As you practice more, you\u2019ll find a process for remembering that works well for you and in turn helps you in your coaching business.<\/p>\n
