The focus of a client in describing goals may actually hinder their success.\u00a0 In Neuro Linguistic Programming the focus is identified as a Meta Program and there are many different Meta Programs.\u00a0 A few significant Meta programs are discussed below.<\/p>\n
When having a conversation, people often talk about what they do NOT want or like instead of talking about what they do want.\u00a0 This focuses the attention on the past or the negative.\u00a0 Coaches recognize this Meta Program or focus, and ask questions to create a shift so that the focus is on what is wanted.\u00a0 This opens the door for developing a strategy and planning.\u00a0 For example, when a client says they do not want to work so many hours, a coach asks them how many hours they do want to work.\u00a0 Then the coach partners with the client to explore options and actions for creating the change.<\/p>\n
When someone is doing something for someone else or to avoid a consequence, the impact is short term.\u00a0 A coach will ask probing questions so that the client becomes aware of their own internal motivation and what it means to them to do something.\u00a0 This creates a long-term buy-in and motivation.<\/p>\n
Rather than waiting for things to happen, a coach will explore with a client what they do control so that they develop a proactive plan moving them forward.\u00a0 For example, with a client that wants a promotion and states they are waiting for their review, a coach will ask what steps they can take between now and their review to move them toward earning the promotion.<\/p>\n
