Coaching involves learning many of the nuances of language to ensure understanding and support a positive, forward focus.\u00a0 In quality coach training<\/a> programs, specific communication techniques and examples of language are provided.<\/p>\n

How things are said in a coaching session matters.\u00a0 When considering a situation for a coaching client, the wording makes a difference.\u00a0 For example: What is the impact of saying you, I, or we?\u00a0 When said at the beginning of a sentence, \u201cyou\u201d is often interpreted as an attack and the person spoken to feels defensive without realizing the reason.\u00a0 \u201cI\u201d specifies ownership and who it is about.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u201d often really means \u201cyou\u201d so it is patronizing.<\/p>\n

Consider these examples:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should apply for more jobs.\u201d\u00a0 Chances are the person will defend that they are applying for many jobs, and explain barriers to applying for others.\u00a0 An alternative, \u201cWhat is your game plan for job applications?\u201d opens the door for proactive planning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am frustrated when I feel unheard because then it seems everything gets stuck.\u201d\u00a0 Using this language supports an opportunity for further discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should take out the garbage.\u201d\u00a0 Typically this is a request for a specific though unidentified person to take out the garbage because it is a one-person job. \u00a0Instead, \u201cPlease take out the garbage now\u201d is respectful and clear.<\/p>\n
