{"id":3278,"date":"2012-03-02T06:03:21","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T06:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centerforcoachingcertification.com\/coachingblog\/?p=3278"},"modified":"2022-09-20T18:39:01","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T18:39:01","slug":"professional-coaching-and-note-taking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/professional-coaching-and-note-taking\/","title":{"rendered":"Professional Coaching and Note-taking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/coach-asks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3279\" title=\"coaches take notes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.CoachCert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/coach-asks-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"coaches take notes\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Do business, life, and executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/certified-professional-coach\/program-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaches<\/a> take notes?\u00a0 Recently a discussion on LinkedIn had many opinions and reasons either for or against note-taking.\u00a0 Some believe that taking notes interferes with really listening while others believe note-taking assists with listening.\u00a0 Some believe notes create a potential for violating confidentiality.\u00a0 Others find that notes are an important tool for effective coaching.\u00a0 Many commented on how notes are taken.<\/p>\n<p>What are the tips for effective note-taking?\u00a0 Write only the key points and key words.\u00a0 What does this mean?\u00a0 If a client is talking about a problem and what they do not want, listen completely without writing and then ask what they do want and include that in the notes.\u00a0 Rather than writing complete sentences, just jot down the key words so that the focus remains on the client.\u00a0 Write the notes using their words rather than an interpretation for accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Are there good tools for note-taking?\u00a0 One favorite is MindMapper (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.MindMapper.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.MindMapper.com<\/a>) because it allows for ease of movement on the page for notes, ease for re-arranging, and ease of transferring the notes to an outline in Microsoft Word.<\/p>\n<p>What happens with the notes?\u00a0 The key consideration is confidentiality.\u00a0 This means that if the notes are taken on a company computer there may be limitations to the confidentiality.\u00a0 If taken on a personal computer do ensure the access is protected.\u00a0 Hand-written notes may be easy to keep protected and if the writing is legible some prefer this method.\u00a0 Either way, providing the client with a copy of the notes is often helpful to them for their reference and because the action steps are listed.\u00a0 Releasing notes to anyone other than the client requires obtaining permission from the client first.<\/p>\n<p>Professional business, life, and executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/is-coaching-right-for-me-take-the-quiz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaches<\/a> are well-served to consider in advance how notes are taken, where they are kept, and how long they are kept after the coaching relationship is ended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do business, life, and executive coaches take notes?\u00a0 Recently a discussion on LinkedIn had many opinions and reasons either for or against note-taking.\u00a0 Some believe &hellip;
