Whether in a formal peer coaching<\/a> relationship on the job or informally with friends, how exactly does peer coaching work?\u00a0 Peers want to be helpful and when a peer is struggling, like to offer helpful suggestions.\u00a0 Consider this typical peer conversation:<\/p>\n

Peer A: <\/em>Hi, how are you doing?<\/p>\n

Peer B: <\/em>Okay I guess.\u00a0 I wish I there was an easier way to coordinate everyone\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n

Peer A: <\/em>Why don\u2019t you just tell them the scheduled time and ask them to RSVP?<\/p>\n

Peer B: <\/em>Oh no \u2013 they have to be there so we have to find a time that works.<\/p>\n

Peer A: <\/em>So why don\u2019t you plan it on a set schedule?<\/p>\n

Peer B: <\/em>Well, with what is happening around here there is no way that would work.\u00a0 Thanks anyway for the idea.<\/p>\n

What is happening?\u00a0 Peer A is simply unaware of the nuances of the situation so the ideas are generic in nature.\u00a0 Even if peer A offers an idea that peer B likes, often peer B simply fails to use it because the opportunity for them to think it through was missed.\u00a0 Peer coaching offers a different approach.\u00a0 In coaching, the premise is that the coachee is their own best expert so the role of the coach is to listen and ask questions.<\/p>\n
