maximize their personal and professional potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association for Talent Development<\/a> defines mentoring, \u201cMentoring is a reciprocal and collaborative at-will relationship that most often occurs between a senior and junior employee for the purpose of the mentee\u2019s growth, learning, and career development.\u201d<\/p>\n<table style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Coaching<\/td>\n<td strategic partner.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Mentor is a role model.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Coach asks questions.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Mentor gives advice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Coach elicits the wisdom of the client.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Mentor passes on their wisdom.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Coach ensures the client makes their own decisions.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Mentor makes recommendations.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both coaching and mentoring serve a purpose and provide value.\u00a0 Often professionals have both a mentor and a coach either in progression or simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A natural progression for professional development is moving from a degree into a role, earning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/training\/coach-training-programs-a-la-carte\/coach-training-a-la-carte.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certification<\/a>s, working with a mentor, possibly engaging with consultants, and then working with a coach.\u00a0 Coaching is an advanced form of development and supports results at an advanced level.\u00a0 The research is clear and the average return on investment for a coach is 600% according to Fortune.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider what happens in a mentoring conversation as compared to a coaching conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Mentoring Conversation: The mentor often sets the focus of the conversation or leads the conversation.\u00a0 A mentor will give their opinion and offer advice.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: I heard you are doing well with your project.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: Yes, thank you.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: I also understand that scheduling the completion of the various components with different people is a challenge.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: Yes, it is.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: To manage that you can use the calendar system so everyone can see it.\u00a0 It is also often helpful to have a meeting with everyone and explain interdependencies and get commitments to deadlines.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: Those are good ideas.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: If you want, I can chat with a few key people to have them support you in prodding people along.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: That would be amazing.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: What else can I do to help?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: I think that is all for now.\u00a0 Well, maybe recommend a book for me on leading a team?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mentor: Actually, I have a few in my office \u2013 you are welcome to borrow them.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Mentee: Thanks!<\/p>\n<p>Coaching Conversation: The client sets the focus for the conversation and creates the agenda.\u00a0 The coach asks questions, so the client thinks, explores, and makes their own choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: What do you want to focus on in this conversation?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: I want some ideas for handling scheduling and follow-through with people working on different parts of a project.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: What do you want to talk through to accomplish that?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: Well, calendaring is one thing.\u00a0 And to do that will probably take a meeting.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: Where do you want to start?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: Planning the meeting.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: What are your steps for planning the meeting?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: First is to pick a date and time and doing that will mean looking at everyone\u2019s availability in the calendar system.\u00a0 Then I will add it to the calendar.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: Excellent.\u00a0 What is next?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: The meeting agenda.\u00a0 I want to have a list of the various parts in order of required completion so the next thing on the list can happen.\u00a0 I want to have a rough timeline for everything.\u00a0 Then I can share those and ask them for questions or comments.\u00a0 Then I will ask everyone to finalize their work time and completion time.\u00a0 Finally, we will make sure it goes into the calendar.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: Great work figuring that out.\u00a0 Seems you both planned the meeting and addressed scheduling too.\u00a0 What else do you want to cover?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: I think their accountability.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: What are your ideas for the accountability?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: Well, their participation in finalizing the schedule is a start.\u00a0 I can ask them if they understand the implications if we don\u2019t meet the deadline.\u00a0 I can let them know I will help if they want that or find them help.\u00a0 In the end I think I have to ask them how they want to manage the accountability.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coach: Seems you have great ideas \u2013 how does your plan feel to you?<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Client: This feels great \u2013 thanks so much!<\/p>\n<p>When someone really doesn\u2019t know, a mentor is valuable because they can teach and guide.\u00a0 When someone can figure
