{"id":11509,"date":"2023-05-11T11:02:22","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T11:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/?p=11509"},"modified":"2023-03-20T18:34:58","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T18:34:58","slug":"what-motivates-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/what-motivates-change\/","title":{"rendered":"What Motivates Change?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change is a constant.\u00a0 Humans are creatures of habit.\u00a0 These two sayings tell us that as much as we value routines, change will happen.\u00a0 Sometimes the change is thrust upon us and other times we proactively seek it.\u00a0 Some people resist change while others embrace it.\u00a0 Moving into change may be based on discomfort with the current state or it may be a desire for something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motivation for change may be external or internal.\u00a0 External is when it is for someone or something else, or to avoid a consequence.\u00a0 External motivators have a short-term impact.\u00a0 Internal motivators are based on values, desires, and meaning to the individual.\u00a0 Internal motivation has a long-term impact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External motivators may include other people or temporary rewards.\u00a0 External motivators based on avoidance include loss \u2013 loss of a job, loss of money, etc. or a consequence such as a speeding ticket.\u00a0 Sometimes circumstances or even mood as a result of those circumstances can motivate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal motivators may be based on self-regard and speak to image, validation, or hitting bottom.\u00a0 Curiosity and passion are internal motivators.\u00a0 The desire for autonomy can be a strong internal motivator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the motivation comes from a negative place of discomfort or a proactive desire, there is a decision: accept the current state and let go of the desire or choose to engage in the change.\u00a0 When the choice is made to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/resources\/faqs\/how-to-become-a-coach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engage in change<\/a>, the natural progression is to set the specific, measurable goal, plan, act, evaluate and adjust, and over time either give up or establish a new normal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11510\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11510\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/11-May-What-Motivates-Change.png\" alt=\"A chart that explains What Motivates Change?\" width=\"360\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/11-May-What-Motivates-Change.png 641w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/11-May-What-Motivates-Change-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.coachcert.com\/coachingblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/11-May-What-Motivates-Change-111x60.png 111w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What Motivates Change?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With change being an ongoing process, the new normal become something that is either accepted or it motivates a different change.<\/p>\n<p>When coaching a client who is considering change, moving into change, and creating a new norm, helpful coaching questions include:<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are your options?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What happens if you move forward?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What happens if you stay where you are now?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are the reasons to change?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are the reasons to maintain the status quo?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are the risks?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are the rewards?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is influencing your choices?<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is your ideal outcome?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exploration these questions invite will serve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coach-123.com\/coaching-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching<\/a> client.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Change is a constant.\u00a0 Humans are creatures of habit.\u00a0 These two sayings tell us that as much as we value routines, change will happen.\u00a0 Sometimes &hellip;
